1990'S GRUNGE & INDY MUSIC (3)

Well, at some point we were going to have to talk about:

NIRVANA
(back before the masses knew them)

But you already know
all about them, right?

Yes, Nirvana was a true Grunge band and right there from the start.

Then they got the Kiss of Death:
Popularity With The Masses

In Kurt Cobain's case: literally.

I met him at a show in Ann Arbor, MI when Nirvana opened up for the Flaming Lips (can you believe it?)

I also saw them live in Chicago with
Bhang Revival.

Bleach
A true Grunge album

There were many other cool bands back in the 1990's.
The lines between "Grunge" and "Indy" became blurred.
(Labels, just labels...)

Just some of the bands that were around:

Reverend Horton Heat (Psychobilly)

OTHER RECORD LABELS:

Glitterhouse Records (link)

CRUZ Records

and of course,

WAX TRAX of Chicago
but then we're off on a different sort of music...
INDUSTRIAL
(Ministry, KMFDM, etc.)

Postscript:

Once the Major Record Labels started taking notice of the Indy/Grunge Phenomena,
they started signing bands as fast as they could get their pens out.

It was the beginning of the end.

Quite often the next step was to manipulate these bands...

"Alice In Chains was a Heavy Metal band. The record label told them to put on some flannel shirts and listen to Soundgarden."
(anonymous quote)

Enter Pearl Jam, grown out of the dust of Green River and
Mother Love Bone (big little band in Seattle)
Enter as well: Stone Temple Pilots.

Sure, these bands were okay, but they were
NOT Grunge.

More 1990´s music that isn´t really Grunge:

Jack Off Jill

Trick Babys

Hey You! Why not check out this 21st Century band?
